CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The third-ranked Northwestern University women's lacrosse team four consecutive second-half goals to overcome a 5-2 halftime deficit and defeat No. 6 North Carolina, 6-5, Sunday afternoon at the Tar Heels' Fetzer Field. The game was the season opener for both teams.
Lindsey Munday had two goals and two assists for the Wildcats, including the game-winning goal with 2:24 left to play. Kristen Kjellman also had two goals for Northwestern, while Laura Glassanos had a goal and an assist and Donna McCann also scored.
For UNC, Allison Higgins had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Kristen Hordy played very well in goal for Carolina, recording 15 saves, several of which were made on point-blank shots by the Wildcats. NU outshot the Heels, 33-16.
Carolina took control midway through the first half of action. After the Wildcats jumped out to leads of 1-0 and 2-1, Higgins' goal at the 22:32 mark tied the score at 2-2. That tally sparked a four-goal run by the Tar Heels, and Higgins assisted goals by Melissa McCarthy and Christina Juras.
The Wildcats switched their defenses at halftime and controlled possession for much of the second period. Kjellman, Munday, Glassanos and McCann scored goals in the second half to provide the winning margin. The Northwestern defense effectively limited Carolina's scoring chances late in the game, as senior goalkeeper Ashley Gersuk finished the day with five saves.
Northwestern returns to action next weekend, meeting Oregon (Saturday) and Denver (Sunday) in games to be played at the University of Denver.
