Wildcats Jump to Seventh at Big Ten Meet

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Northwestern got strong performances from several individuals and the 400 medley relay to leap two spots to seventh at the Big Ten Championships on Friday.
The Wildcats currently have 191 points, trailing sixth place Minnesota by 20. Iowa is in eighth position with 174 while Penn State leads the meet with 485 points.
Freshman Andrea Hupman turned in the Wildcats' most impressive effort of the day, capturing third in the 200 freestyle with a school record and NCAA 'A' cut time of 1:46.73. She tied for first in the prelims with a 1:47.69. Her finals time was also a pool record.
Northwestern's 400 medley relay also turned in a third-place finish, tying Purdue with an NCAA 'B' time of 3:43.73. Carrera Harris, Brielle Bovee, Christy Olin and Hupman comprised the relay for NU.
Bovee turned in the second best time in Northwestern history in the 100 breast, swimming a 1:02.86 to finish in fourth place. Her time was also an NCAA 'B' cut.
Olin swam a career-best 55.02 in the 100 fly during the prelims, then finished in sixth in the finals with a 55.11 -- also a 'B' qualifying time. Katie Braun also pointed in the event with an 11th-place finish with a 'B' time of 55.33.
In the 400 IM, both Braun and Amy Mueller scored points for NU. Braun finished in ninth with a 4:21.70 and Mueller was 11th with a 4:23.24. Both times are consideration marks.
In the 100 back, Harris finished 10th with a time of 56.47.
Sophomore diver Leanne Dumais finished 12th on the 3-meter board to also score points for the Wildcats.
While they did not point, several other Wildcats had good swims Friday night. Senior Michaela Restivo finished 19th in the 100 fly with a personal-best time of 56.14. Senior Lori Schwanhausser also had a 19th-place finish with a career-best time of 1:50.41 in the 200 freestyle.
The meet concludes with a full day of events on Saturday.
