BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Trailing by five runs through the first four innings, Northwestern pushed across four in both the fifth and sixth frames to defeat Boston College, 8-5, Sunday morning and finish third at the Florida Atlantic Worth Invitational.
After scoring just four runs in the previous four games of the tournament, the Wildcats put up that many in back-to-back innings to mount a impressive comeback.
Sophomore Jessica Miller (Elberfeld, Ind./Techumseh) walked to lead off the NU fifth, then was replace on the basepaths by sophomore Katie Logan (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol). Freshman Darcy Sengewald (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) then hit a bunt single and both runners advanced on a throwing error.
Freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) hit a ball to shortstop that was too hot to handle, scoring Logan. Churchwell was thrown out at second base trying to advance on the error.
With the score at 5-1, NU's big bats came out. Senior Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) hit a two-run blast while junior Kristen Amegin (W. Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) hit a solo shot to bring NU to within one, 5-4.
Amegin finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and the home run while Sengewald ended up a perfect 2-for-2.
In the sixth inning, sophomore Megan Hinck (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) got things started with a one out single, then advanced to second when Miller reached on an error. Sengewald then walked to load the bases.
Churchwell stepped up and hit a two RBI single to give NU the lead for the first time at 6-5. Sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) added some insurance with a two-out, two-RBI double to give the Wildcats their winning advantage, 8-5.
Cooper has now recorded a hit in all of NU's games so far this season.
Sophomore Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) tossed five and a third innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out five to earn the win. Her record improves to 4-2 on the season.
Junior Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) started the game for the Wildcats, but was lifted with two outs in the second inning after Boston College erupted for five scores.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 7-3 on the season while Boston College falls to 2-4.
The Wildcats return to action Feb. 25-27 at the Palm Spring Tournament hosted by Oregon State.
