BOCA RATON, Fla. -- With its powerful offense struggling in the Florida sun, Northwestern's pitchers have taken over.
After junior Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) tossed a one-hit shutout Saturday morning against Boston College, sophomore Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) weaved a shutout of her own against the host Lady Owls in the nightcap of the FAU Worth Invitational to give NU a 1-0 win.
Canney (3-2) allowed five hits and a pair of walks while striking out eight to make the Wildcats' single run hold up.
That run came in the fifth inning when sophomore Megan Hinck (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) led off with single then scored on an RBI double by sophomore Jessica Miller (Elberfeld, Ind./Techumseh).
Miller's hit was her third of the season and the sixth of her career -- and all of them have been doubles.
Sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) hit a single in the third innings to give her a hit in each of NU's first nine games of the year. She is currently batting a team-best .455 on the season.
Junior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) also rapped a double for NU.
Freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and senior Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) both hit singles to lead off the first inning for NU, but were erased on the basepaths.
The Wildcats will play in the third-place game at 10 a.m. CT Sunday against the winner of Boston College and Florida Atlantic.
