Northwestern vs. Iowa
November 5, 2005
Ryan Field, Evanston, Ill.

Northwestern Notes

  • Northwestern won for the fourth time in its last five games and improved to 6-3 overall, 4-2 in the Big Ten. With the victory, Northwestern is now bowl-eligible for the third time under Randy Walker. The Wildcats conclude the season with two road games: at Ohio State (Nov. 12) and at Illinois (Nov. 19).

  • Northwestern has won four of its last five meetings vs. Iowa at Ryan Field. It was the Wildcats first win over the Hawkeyes since Oct. 16, 1999, and ended a three-game Iowa winning series streak vs. NU.

  • Since the start of the 2004 season, the Wildcats are 10-2 in games decided by seven points or less. Northwestern is 5-1 when it has more passing yards than its opponents. The Wildcats, however, did win their first game of the season (1-3) when the opponent has more rushing yards.

  • With 453 total yards today, NU has exceeded 400 yards of total offense in 10 consecutive contests.

  • Coach Randy Walker is the first Northwestern coach since 1931 to direct three consecutive Wildcat teams to six or more victories. The last coach to do it was Dick Hanley (1929 to 1931). Walker also moved into a second-place tie on Northwestern's all-time coaching victory list with Ara Parseghian (36-35-1, 1956-63) and Hanley (36-26-4, 1927-34). Lynn "Pappy" Waldorf is NU's win leader at 49-45-7. Walker is now 36-44 at Northwestern and 95-79-5 overall.

  • LB Tim McGarigle, the Butkus and Bednarik Award semifinalist, became the Northwestern career tackle leader in the first quarter. McGarigle's 13 stops today give him 511 for his career, passing Chuck Kern, who had 503 tackles from 1977 to '80.

  • McGarigle, who was tied with Iowa's Chad Greenway for the Big Ten tackle lead going into the game, outdid Greenway, 13-11, in stops today. He now has 27 career games with double-digit tackle totals.

  • QB Brett Basanez totaled 338 passing yards vs. Iowa, giving him 2,845 for the season-a single-season Northwestern record. He also upped the Wildcats' season passing yardage mark to 2,872, seven yards shy of the school mark (2,879) set in 1982.

  • A update on Basanez's career numbers, and where he stands on the Big Ten's and NCAA's all-time list:

  • 835 pass completions (first on NU list; second on Big Ten list-191 behind Drew Brees, Purdue)
  • 1,452 pass attempts (first on NU list; second on Big Ten list-226 behind Drew Brees, Purdue)
  • 9,803 passing yards (first on NU list; fourth on Big Ten list-143 behind Mark Herrmann, Purdue)
  • 10,696 total offense yards (first on NU list; third on Big Ten list-668 behind Antwaan Randle El, Indiana)
  • 1,815 offensive plays (first on NU list; third on Big Ten list-102 behind Antwaan Randle El, Indiana)
NCAA Career Total Offense NCAA Career Passing Yards
    	25. Derek Anderson (2001-04, Oregon State) 10,716	37. Chris Weincke (1997-00, Florida St.)	9,839
    	26. Ryan Schneider (2000-03, UCF)	10,703 38. Ryan Dinwiddie (2000-03, Boise St.)	9,819
    	27. Brett Basanez (2002-present, NU)	10,696 39. Brett Basanez (2002-present, NU) 9,803
    	28. Stoney Case (1991-94, New Mexico)	10,651	40. Casey Clausen (2000-03, Tennessee)	9,707

  • QB Brett Basanez now has a school-record 24 200-plus yard passing games, including 10 in a row. He is 197 yards shy of the 10,000-yard career mark. Basanez, college football's leading active passer, has started 43 career games, including 37 in succession.

  • Basanez, the Unitas Golden Arm finalist, has 3,165 yards of total offense this season, second only on the NU season list to Zak Kustok's 3,272 in 2001.

  • Basanez threw two more touchdown passes today, giving him 16 for the year. That leaves him in fourth place on NU's single-season list and four shy of the Wildcats' school record (20, set by Zak Kustok in 2001).

  • RB Tyrell Sutton's two rushing touchdowns give him 16 for the season, which adds to his freshman record. Sutton is seven TD's shy of the school's single-season rushing TD mark (set in 2000 by Damien Anderson with 23). Sutton is fifth on NU's single-season list with his 16 scores. Sutton has 17 TD's overall this season, which is six shy of Anderson's school-record total. Sutton, who went over the 1,000-yard mark in his eighth game of the year (vs. Michigan), now has 1,085 rushing yards for the season.

  • WR Mark Philmore's 10 catches is a season-best. His 147 career receptions move him into a tie for fifth place with Jon Schweighardt on the NU career list. His 123 receiving yards give him 1,632 for his career, good enough for ninth place on the Wildcat career list. He has caught a pass in all of 37 career games played.

  • WR Ross Lane registered a career-high six catches, which included the game-winning catch with 42 seconds remaining. It was his first career touchdown. Lane became the ninth different NU player to catch a TD pass this season. He also is the fourth freshman (joining Tyrell Sutton, Eric Peterman and Rasheed Ward) to catch a TD pass this year.

  • WR Shaun Herbert, who came into today's game as the Big Ten leader in receptions per game (7.75), caught 4 passes (for 80 yards and 1 TD), giving him 66 for the season, which is two receptions shy of fifth place (Lee Gissendaner, 1992) on NU's single-season list. Herbert upped his career reception total to 108, which is good enough for 10th place on NU's all-time list. Herbert now has 1,314 career receiving yards, which ranks 14th on the NU career list.

  • SAF Herschel Henderson's 14 tackles led all players today and was a career best.

  • Northwestern, which came into the game leading the Big Ten and ranking second nationally in takeaways with 24, was unable to force any Iowa miscues today. Northwestern had forced its previous five Big Ten foes into 18 turnovers (four against every team with the exception of Wisconsin, which had two.) It was the first time since last year's game at Michigan that NU's opponent did not turn the ball over.

    Iowa Notes

  • Iowa started the game on offense after Northwestern won the toss and deferred. The Hawkeyes have started on offense in 70 of their last 76 games. Iowa has started on offense in 72-of-82 contests under Kirk Ferentz. The last time Iowa did not start on offense was at Purdue (10/8/05).

  • Redshirt fredshman WR Andy Brodell started for the first time in his career. Brodell had three receptions for 39 yards on Iowa's opening scoring drive after having just two receptions for 23 yards in Iowa's first eight games. Brodell started in place of senior Clinton Solomon, who missed practice time this week due to the death of his grandfather.

  • Northwestern failed to score on its first possession. Only two Iowa opponents have scored (both touchdowns) on their opening possession this season (Purdue and Ohio State).

  • Iowa scored a touchdown on its opening possession on a 12-yard run by RB Albert Young. The Hawkeyes also scored touchdowns on their first possession in games against Ball State, Northern Iowa, Illinois, Purdue and Michigan. Iowa's opening scoring drive covered 78 yards in 11 plays.

  • With 14 points vs. Northwestern, Iowa has outscored its nine opponents 105-20 in the first period.

  • Senior CB Jovon Johnson did not play vs. Northwestern, ending a streak of 33 straight starts, dating to the opening game of the 2003 season. Iowa has no defensive backs who have started all nine games this season. Johnson's starting streak was tied for the longest among Iowa players, as LB Chad Greenway and LB Abdul Hodge have not started 34 straight games.

  • RB Albert Young reached career-highs in rushing attempts, rushing yards and all-purpose yards. He carried the ball 38 times for a career-high 202 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a career-high 274 all-purpose yards.

  • His 38 attempts rank as the fourth highest total in a single game and his 202 yards tied for ninth (Jim Jensen vs. Indiana, 10/18/75) for a single game. Jensen also had two touchdowns in that game.

  • His previous bests were 36 attempts for 165 yards rushing yards at Purdue earlier this season, where he also had 217 all-purpose yards. He surpassed 100 rushing yards for the fifth straight game and sixth time (Iowa State, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana and Michigan) this season. Young raised his season totals to 169 attempts for 973 yards, rushing for over 1,000 yards for the first time in his career.

  • Young has seven rushing touchdowns on the season and he rushed for two touchdowns in a game for the third time this season.

  • Iowa's most recent 1,000-yard rusher was Fred Russell in 2003 (282-1,355 yards). Young becomes the 11th Iowa running back to surpass 1,000 yards. He is the fourth Iowa player to surpass 1,000 yards in a season as a sophomore. That was also accomplished by Tony Stewart in 1988, Sedrick Shaw in 1994 and Fred Russell in 2002.

  • Iowa's field goal drive to end the second quarter covered 88 yards in 14 plays. The 88-yard scoring drive is Iowa's longest of the season, surpassing an 85-yard TD drive vs. Michigan. Iowa also had a 14-play drive at Ohio State, but that drive resulted in no points.

  • Instant replay was used once today in the third period. A Northwestern pass that was ruled incomplete was changed to a completion.

  • DL Matt Kroul, a redshirt freshman, came up with first career interception early in the fourth period. The theft was the first turnover of the game and led to Kyle Schlicher's second field goal of the game.

  • PK Kyle Schlicher scored nine points today (2 FGs, 3 PATs) to increase his career point total to 165. Schlicher ranks 11th all-time in Iowa career scoring, one point behind David Hudson.

  • QB Drew Tate completed 21-35 passes for 273 yards. He scored his third career rushing touchdown (first this season) in the first half on a 10-yard run. Tate has 34 career touchdown passes, which ranks fifth on Iowa's all-time QB list. The junior ranks fifth in both career passing yards and total yards.

  • Sophomore DB Adam Shada had his third interception of the season in the fourth period. Shada, starting for the third time this season, leads the team in interceptions.

  • Iowa came up with two interceptions vs. Northwestern, marking the first time this season Iowa has more than one interception in a game. Prior to the game the Wildcats led the Big Ten and ranked seventh in the nation in turnover margin (+10).

  • Iowa had a season high in plays (76) and first downs (26). Iowa had 74 offensive plays at Iowa State and 25 first downs vs. Illinois. Iowa had its third game of the season with no turnovers (Northern Iowa and Purdue).
  • With its second straight loss after leading at halftime and after three periods, Iowa falls to 32-3 when leading at the half and 35-2 when leading after three quarters, dating back to the 2002 season. Additionally, the Hawkeyes fall to 13-3 in October, dating back to 2002.

  • LB Chad Greenway, with 11 tackles today, moved into fifth place on Iowa's career tackle list, moving past LB Fred Barr. Greenway has 380 career stops. Greenway has posted double digit tackles 23 times in his career, including eight times this year.

  • LB Abdul Hodge had a game-high 12 tackles today to move past 400 career stops. He ranks fourth on Iowa's career tackle chart with 407. Hodge has recorded double digit tackles 20 times in his career and six times in 2005.
