EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, making Northwestern the first school in Big Ten history to earn Swimmer of the Week honors in three-consecutive weeks.
Grevers joins classmate Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), who earned the award on Nov. 8 and Nov. 15, as honorees this season.
Grevers swam four NCAA provisional times at the Boilermaker Invitational over the weekend. The defending NCAA champion in the 100 backstroke swam to first in the event in an 'A' standard of 47.22. Grevers then matched the Purdue pool record -- set in 2004 by Northwestern's Tony Swanson -- in the 100 fly by claiming another 'A' mark of 46.89.
He then went on to break the 20-second mark in the 50 free for the first time this season with an NCAA 'B' time of 19.98. Grevers placed second in the 200 backstroke in 1:44.97, meeting another 'B' standard.
The honor is the fourth of Grevers' career and the first of this season.
