EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's field hockey team scored four second-half goals en route to a 5-0 victory over Lindenwood Sunday. Ellen Schlafly (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) and Alexandra Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) each score two goals while Meghan Small (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) scored her eighth goal this season.
Northwestern dominated the match offensively and defensively. For the game, the Wildcats outshot the Lions 25-3 and recorded a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalminder Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) recorded her first shutout this season.
The Wildcats got the ball rolling early in the first half when Schlafly took a pass from Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) following a penalty corner and sent it home to give Northwestern the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats didn't allow Lindenwood any shots or penalty corners in the first half, and went into halftime with the 1-0 lead.
Quinn scored her first collegiate goal early in the second period to make it 2-0.
Quinn then got on the other side of a scoring opportunity when she left a pass for Schlafly who sent it in for her second goal of the day.
Small got in the mix later in the second half, taking a shot off a penalty corner past the Lindenwood keeper to make it 4-0 Northwestern.
Quinn scored once more late into the second half to make it 5-0 Northwestern. With her two-goal day, Northwestern now boasts five players who have recorded multi-goal performances this season.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 7-6 on the season. The Wildcats are back in action at home at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 against conference-foe Iowa.
