No. 12 Iowa Slips Past Northwestern, 3-1

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 12 Iowa scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over Northwestern Friday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex. The Wildcats enjoyed a 17-13 shot advantage as well as a 7-4 penalty corner advantage. Annie Bosslet (Granite City, Ill./Duchesne) scored her first collegiate goal in the match.
Iowa struck first almost seven minutes into the match when Caitlin McCurdy redirected a shot past junior goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead.
The Hawkeyes struck again at 22:06 to make it 2-0.
The Wildcats had their scoring chances in the first half. They tallied 10 shots and six penalty corners, but couldn't put one past the Hawkeye defense.
After one more score at 33:53, Iowa went into the break with a 3-0 lead.
Northwestern came out of the break looking to finish its scoring opportunities. While they plugged away on the offensive end, Iowa goalkeeper Lisa Munley tallied five second-half saves to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Boslett came through on a breakaway in the 68th minute. After receiving a long pass from Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) in transition, Boslett streaked down the field and beat Munley to bring the Wildcats within two.
"We need to play consistently," head coach Kelly McCollum said. "We produced, but we need to finish. We have moments of greatness and we just need to string those together. Consistency is the biggest factor and we need to stay strong all game."
With the loss, Northwestern drops to 7-7 on the year, 0-4 in the Big Ten.
"We're working on learning and growing every game. I was proud of the way we came out in the second half; we didn't quit and we didn't back down," McCollum said.
Northwestern is back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16 against Michigan. The game is senior day for Northwestern, and there are special pregame introductions for each of the Wildcat seniors before the match.
