Northwestern vs. No. 14 Wisconsin
Post-Game Notes
October 8, 2005
Ryan Field, Evanston, Ill.

Northwestern Notes

* Northwestern halted its two-game losing streak and improved to 3-2 overall, 1-1 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats have won eight of their last nine games at Ryan Field. Seven of those eight wins have come in the final seconds or overtime.

* Northwestern has won three of its last four games vs. Wisconsin and five of the last nine. Head coach Randy Walker, who moved into a fifth-place tie on NU's all-time victory list (33rd win) with Bob Voigts (1947-54), closes with a 3-2 all-time record vs. Barry Alvarez. Alvarez finishes 7-7 in 14 all-time meetings vs. Northwestern (3-5 at Northwestern's Ryan Field).

* When playing at Ryan Field, Northwestern improved to 6-5 versus ranked teams under Randy Walker. Northwestern has won three straight home games vs. ranked teams (Oct. 2, 2004 vs. Ohio State; Oct. 30, 2004 vs. Purdue; Oct. 8, 2005 vs. Wisconsin).

* Northwestern piled up a school-record 674 yards of total offense, 20 more than it did vs. Michigan (654 yards) in its memorable 54-51 win at Ryan Field in 2000. Combined, Northwestern and Wisconsin totaled 1,189 yards-the same exact figure produced by Northwestern (654) and Michigan (535) in the 2000 contest.

* Like it did in 2000 vs. Michigan, Northwestern totaled 300-plus yards rushing (313) and passing (361) vs. Wisconsin. Against Michigan, the Wildcat totals were 332 rushing and 322 passing.

* Northwestern's 8.3 yards per offensive play average is a school record, besting the 8.1 yards per play vs. Michigan State in 1992.

* Northwestern gained 313 yards on the ground against a Wisconsin team that was allowing 77.4 per game after its first five games.

* Northwestern's 51 points is its highest point total since scoring 61 against Illinois in 2000.

* RB Tyrell Sutton rushed for a career-high 244 yards and now has 772 yards in five games (154.4 ypg). It was his second 200-yard game of his young career after totaling 214 yards vs. Northern Illinois on Sept. 10. In five games, Sutton has accomplished what Darnell Autry and Jason Wright did in their careers-run for 200 yards on a pair of occasions. (Damien Anderson holds NU's record for most 200-yard games with four.) In five games, Sutton has two 200-yard games, two 100-yard games and a 98-yard game (12 carries vs. Arizona State).

* Sutton's 244-yard rushing effort is the sixth-best single-game performance in school history.

* Sutton set a Northwestern freshman single season rushing mark. His 772 breaks Greg Boykin's record of 625, set in 1972.

* Sutton's 62-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was a career long. His 28-yard run in the second quarter is the second-longest of his career. The 62-yarder is NU's longest run or pass play this season.

* Sutton caught his first career touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. He finished with four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving), which equals the school record he already holds and one that is held by several NU players.

* With his start today, Basanez now has an NU-record 39 career starts at quarterback, including 33 in succession. He now has 18 career victories, one shy of the Wildcats' modern-era record of 19, held by Steve Schnur (1993-96).

* Basanez crossed the 8,000-yard career passing and 9,000-yard career total offense plateaus today.

* An update on Brett Basanez's career numbers and his school/Big Ten rank: * 717 pass completions (first on NU list; seventh on Big Ten list-48 behind John Navarre, UM) * 1,267 pass attempts (first on NU list; fifth on Big Ten list-42 behind Mark Hermann, Purdue) * 8,345 passing yards (first on NU list; ninth on Big Ten list-377 behind Kurt Kittner, ILL) * 9,126 total offense yards (first on NU list; sixth on Big Ten list-8 behind Mark Hermann, Purdue) * 1,603 total offensive plays (first on NU list; fifth on Big Ten list-4 behind Kyle Orton, Purdue)

* QB Brett Basanez's 52-yard touchdown pass to WR Kim Thompson is Northwestern's longest pass play this season and the longest in Thompson's career.

* Basanez's 361 passing yards marked the second time this season he has passed for over 300 yards and the fifth time in his career. It was the ninth-best single-game passing performance in NU history. Basanez has totaled 200-plus yards in a game for an NU-record 20 times. He totaled 430 yards of total offense, the fifth-best single-game mark in NU history.

* Basanez threw to eight different receivers. His three touchdown passes went to three different receivers. Sophomore Sam Cheatham caught his first collegiate pass-a 33-yard reception.

* Basanez's 69 rushing yards today is a career high.

* WR Jonathan Fields led all NU receivers with eight catches, equaling a career single-game high.

* WR Mark Philmore has caught a pass in all 33 career games played. He also climbed to 13th place on NU's all-time receiving yardage list (1,274 yards) and eighth place on NU's all-time reception list (122 with Scott Yelvington).

* RB Gerard Hamlett's 81-yard kickoff return is his career long and Northwestern's longest KOR this season.

* LB Tim McGarigle registered a career-high 25 tackles, including a career-high 15 solo tackles. The 25 hits are one tackle shy of the NCAA single-game record of 26 (held by Central Michigan's Brian Leigeb and Northwestern's Doug Szymul). The NCAA began keeping official statistics for tackles and other defensive stats in 2000. Northwestern's single-game record for tackles is 31, however, held by Chuck Kern (vs. Purdue, 1979), NU's all-time tackle leader. McGarigle now has 459 career tackles, 44 shy of Kern's career mark.

* P Ryan Pederson's 60-yard punt was the longest of his career. He finished with three punts for a 45.0 average, which included two inside the 20-yard line.

* Freshman WR Ross Lane, who caught a 27-yard pass, recovered both of Wisconsin's onsides kickoff returns in the fourth quarter.

Wisconsin Notes
• RB Brian Calhoun had 122 yards rushing and 128 yards receiving today, becoming the first Badger in history to go over the century mark in both categories. It was the fifth time this season Calhoun has rushed for at least 100 yards. Calhoun's 11 receptions were the most by a running back in a game during the Alvarez era. The previous high was seven by Calhoun vs. Michigan earlier this season. His 11 receptions were the most by a Badger in a game since 2000 when Chris Chambers did it twice vs. Purdue and Iowa.

• Calhoun's 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was his 11th of the season. Entering today's game he led the country in touchdowns.

• PK Taylor Mehlhaff has made seven consecutive field goals and all eight of his field goals inside of 50 yards this season. His lone miss was a 51-yarder vs. North Carolina. His 46-yard field goal in the third quarter was his career long.

• WR Jonathan Orr caught four touchdown passes today--his third, fourth, fifth and sixth of the season. That gives him 17 for his career, putting him fourth on Wisconsin's all-time list behind Lee Evans (27), Tony Simmons (23) and Al Toon (19). It was the second-best receiving TD performance in school history behind Lee Evans' five scores in 2003 (vs. Michigan State).

• The four touchdown passes give QB John Stocco 11 on the season and 20 for his career. That moves him into a tie with Jim Haluska and Mike Howard for 10th place on UW's all-time list. Stocco has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 12 of the 18 games he has started.

• RB Booker Stanley's touchdown run in the second quarter was his second of the season and the ninth rushing TD of his career.

• DL Kurt Ware's fumble recovery in the second quarter was the first of his career.
