EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern safety Herschel Henderson (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) was tabbed the Big Ten Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for his performance in the Wildcats' 49-14 win at previously nationally ranked (No. 22) Michigan State.
Henderson recorded two of Northwestern's three interceptions on the afternoon -- both at the goal-line -- and also added five tackles (three solos), one of which went for a 9-yard loss.
The three interceptions by the NU defense was impressive since it came against MSU quarterback Drew Stanton, who had entered the game as the nation's leader in pass efficiency, and the MSU offense, which was ranked third nationally in total offense. Stanton had thrown 15 touchdown passes and just three interceptions in the Spartans' first six games this year.
Henderson's two interceptions were a part of the Wildcats' four takeaways, which gave Northwestern's defense a season total of 20. That figure leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth nationally.
Henderson became the sixth different Northwestern player to receive Big Ten weekly accolades this season with his defensive honor.
