EVANSTON, Ill.-- The Northwestern women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Loyola Ramblers this afternoon on a wet and chilly afternoon at the Thomas Athletic Complex in Evanston. The loss drops Northwestern to 9-8-1 overall while Loyola improves to 6-8-1.
The Wildcats dominated in all phases of the game except for the final score. Loyola took one shot in the first half, a header by Alexia Murray off a Jamie Wasielewski corner shot for the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute.
The 'Cats had plenty of scoring opportunities of their own, outshooting the Ramblers, 19-7, 11 of which were on goal. Loyola's stingy defense recorded three team saves while Rambler keeper Emily Peick recorded eight saves of her own.
Northwestern had eight corners to Loyola's two and outshot the Ramblers, 10-1, in the first half.
"We certainly had a lot of chances and attacked a lot," head coach Jenny Haigh said. "We just really struggled to put one away. We had a lot of good chances, especially in the second half."
The 'Cats took shots from all directions but couldn't put one away. Nine different Wildcat players took at least one shot with Tabitha Lowey (Sr., Peachtree City, Ga./Mcintosh), Kelsey Hans (So., Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) and Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) leading with three each. Whitney Jones (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) had four saves in goal for the 'Cats.
Northwestern now shifts its focus back to Big Ten play when they take on the Wisconsin Badgers at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 in the regular season finale with a Big Ten Tournament berth on the line. After Wisconsin's win today, both teams enter Friday's game with identical 2-6-1 records in the Big Ten with the winner receiving a tournament berth.
"Wisconsin is going to be one of the toughest teams we've faced," Haigh said. "I think they are a great team. They have had a lot of results just like us where they have outshot their opponent but given up a lot of goals defensively. We'll be ready for them."
