EVANSTON, Ill. -- After going down by three scores in the first half, Northwestern's field hockey team fell to Michigan 6-1 Sunday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex. With the loss, Northwestern moves to 7-8 on the season, 0-5 in the Big Ten. Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) scored her 11th goal of the season in the match.
The Wildcats played Michigan tough throughout the match, keeping pace with the Wolverines in almost all statistical categories. In the first half, Northwestern put 6 shots-on-goal, but its first score proved to be elusive.
Michigan lit up the board first, scoring in the 15th minute to go up 1-0.
The Wolverines scored again just seven minutes later to push their lead to two.
After one more Wolverine score in the 31st minute, Northwestern went into the break down by three.
Coming out of the break, Northwestern focused on capitalizing on its scoring opportunities. While Northwestern did step up the offensive intensity, it was Michigan that struck again in the second half.
The Wolverines scored three goals in a four-minute span to push its lead to 6-0.
At 61:01, Putnam took a pass from Alexandra Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) and beat the Wolverine keeper to the left, bringing Northwestern within five.
Statistically, the match was closer than the score would show. Northwestern trailed Michigan 24-21 in total shots, 10-6 in penalty corners, while each team recorded seven saves in the match.
Northwestern is back in action at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Michigan State.
