MADISON, Wis. -- After struggling in the first game against No. 8 Wisconsin Wednesday night at the UW Field House, Northwestern gave the Badgers a run despite falling in three games, 30-17, 30-27, 30-19.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 10-7, 1-6 in the Big Ten. Six of its losses this year have come to teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches poll. Wisconsin improves to 14-2, 6-1 with the win.
Wisconsin put together a 9-0 run early in game number one to take a 14-4 lead. The Badgers eventually opened a 20-6 advantage, but even down big the Wildcats showed fight against the nation's No. 8-ranked team.
Northwestern went on a 10-5 run to make the UW lead nine, 25-16, spurred by a trio of kills from sophomore Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier). Wisconsin would eventually win the game, 30-17.
The Badgers tried to run away early in game two, as well, but Northwestern did a much better job of responding. After a 4-0 UW run to take a 7-3 lead, NU head coach Keylor Chan called timeout and the Wildcats contained the run and cut the lead to two, 10-8.
The teams alternated the next 11 points until Wisconsin broke the trend with a trio of scores to make the score 18-13 and prompt NU's second timeout.
The Badgers extended their lead to six, 20-14, before a 3-0 Wildcat run forced a timeout from the home team. With the score 27-22 in favor of UW, NU closed the gap to two, 28-26, before Wisconsin closed out a 30-27 win for a 2-0 lead in the match.
Game three saw Wisconsin out to a 9-4 lead before an NU timeout. The Wildcats responded with the next two points to again quash any UW attempt at running away with the game early.
Another Badger run got their lead up to seven, 16-9, and Chan used his second timeout. NU came out with a 7-2 run to cut the Badger lead to two, 18-16.
From there, Wisconsin took over and finished the game with a 30-19 win to claim the match in a sweep.
Sophomore Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) led NU with 13 kills. Senior Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) had 25 digs in the contest, her season-best total in a three-game match. Her total gave her 1,339 digs for her career, moving her into third place on NU's career digs list.
Northwestern returns to action at 7 p.m. Saturday night when it hosts Indiana at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
