EVANSTON, Ill. - Coming off a 5-2 win over Chicago-area rival DePaul Saturday night, Northwestern returns to action in the Combe Tennis Center at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17 against Western Michigan. The Broncos are fresh off a win of their own after shutting out Valparaiso 7-0 Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern enters the match ranked 40th in the nation and is 40-4 against Western Michigan all time. The Broncos are 63rd in the nation.

Western Michigan fell 5-2 in their dual-opener at No. 51 Michigan Saturday. But they rebounded in their home-opener against Valparaiso by claiming all three doubles contests and did not drop a set in singles competition. Western Michigan is coming off a 19-6 record in 2004.

In Northwestern's home-opener against the Blue Demons, junior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) was one of two `Cats to win both his singles and doubles matches. Schaechterle began his night by teaming with senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) at the No. 2 doubles position, winning 8-4. In singles action, Schaechterle shook off dropping the opening set 6-3 and won the second frame 6-4. With Schaechterle up 6-5 in the decisive frame, he broke his opponent's serve to complete the win, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Sophomore Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) also was victorious in both his singles and doubles competitions, teaming with classmate Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother's Rice) to win 8-6, before posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory in singles.

Sophomore Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) provided the clinching singles victory, winning 7-6, 6-3.

Monday's match is part-two of a five-match homestand to open the season for the 'Cats. They next host Oklahoma Friday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. The Sooners are currently the 66-ranked team in the nation.
