EVANSTON, Ill. -- Before beginning Big Ten action next week, Northwestern plays its second straight home game, entertaining the University of Kansas of the Big 12 Conference at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18. This week's game with Kansas is not being televised, which means there is no opportunity to use instant replay.

The Wildcats opened the home portion of their season this past weekend versus Arizona State, and came out on the wrong end of a 30-21 decision. The Wildcats, who jumped out in front 7-3, fell behind 24-7 before mounting a comeback that just fell short. After opening the season with an eye-popping 513 passing yards at TCU, the 'Cats registered 235 of their 463 yards of total offense on the ground.

Kansas makes its first trip to Evanston after opening the season with two convincing wins. The Jayhawks, who are off to their first 2-0 start since 1997, opened the year with a 21-3 win over Tulsa before thumping Mid-American Conference favorite Toledo 63-14 Saturday night. Both of those games were played at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence.

The play of the Jayhawk defense has been the story in their first two games. Kansas held both Tulsa and Toledo to less than 300 yards in offense. Tulsa totaled just 141 yards (50 rushing yards) while Toledo gained 298. The Jayhawks, who are limiting their opposition to 57.0 rushing yards per game--that ranks 14th nationally--have recorded 98 negative rushing yards in just two games. Kansas has recorded seven pass sacks this season. Offensively, Kansas has been efficient, taking advantage of eight opponent turnovers and scoring 42.0 ppg (12th nationally) while averaging just 351.0 yards of total offense (69th nationally) per game.

Kansas' defense is led by senior safety Tony Stubbs and junior linebacker Nick Reid. Stubbs has a team-best 21 tackles and an interception while Reid has 18 tackles, which includes four TFL's, an interception and a forced fumble. Sophomore Adam Barmann is at the controls of the Jayhawk offense, having completed 38-of-65 passes for 409 yardsand five touchdowns. Sophomore running back Jon Randle has 160 rushing and 75 receiving yards through two games. He leads the Jayhawks in all-purpose yardage.

Plenty of tickets are still available for Saturday's game, including NU's new $15 end zone seat. Tickets can be purchased by calling 847-491-CATS or visiting the "Tickets" link on this web site.
