COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Northwestern held national power Maryland to its lowest scoring output of the season, but fell to the Terps, 2-0, Sunday at College Park, Md.
Both of Maryland's goals came in the first half. NU (4-3) goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) made three second-half saves to blank the Terps in the period. Nyberg finished with six saves in the match.
The Terps (6-0) were averaging 4.8 goals per contest coming into Sunday's match. Their two goals equaled their lowest output of the season. Maryland also scored just two goals in a 2-0 win at Boston University on August 29.
"Maryland is a very talented team," NU head coach Kelly McCollum said. "Our kids really took steps after having an off-game on Saturday. Obviously you would like to get the win, but I am proud of how our kids responded from yesterday to today."
Maryland outcornered NU 9-0 and outshot the 'Cats 16-0, but only eight of those shots were on goal. Nyberg saved a penalty stroke in the second half to keep the Terp lead at only a pair of scores.
"Our kids responded to the corrections we made at halftime and played a good team defensive game," McCollum said. "We did a better job of controlling the play."
In the match, freshmen Jenny Stancati (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) and Cassie Miller (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) earned their first career starts. NU started four freshmen and four sophomores in the match.
"We had some young players come in and take chances and play well," McCollum said. "It just showcases our depth when we can start a young lineup and maintain a high level of play."
The Wildcats return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Ball State.
