EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University men's swimmer Tony Swanson was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Second Team in the men's at-large category.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America program is considered the most prestigious academic honor a collegiate student-athlete can receive. The at-large category combines all the NCAA-sponsored sports that do not have their own Academic All-America program; the sports that do have such programs are football, soccer, basketball, baseball, and cross country/track & field.
Swanson is the fourth Wildcat athlete to be honored at the national level this year - the others were Jason Wright and Jeff Backes in football, and Jeremy Cook in men's soccer.
Swanson was one of the leaders as the NU men's swimming team had one of its finest seasons ever. He earned six All-America citations in helping the 'Cats to an 11th-place finish at the 2004 NCAA National Championships.
Swanson is a 10-time All-America and four-time Big Ten Conference champion who was the Swimmer of the Meet at the 2002 Big Ten Championships. He currently holds two school records and is part of four school-record holding relays. Swanson will graduate later this week with a degree in mechanical engineering.
