EVANSTON, Ill. -- Justin Chabot, Northwestern's director of football operations since 1999, has announced his resignation, effective June 1, to take a regional scouting position with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. Chabot will serve as the 49ers' Midwest scout and maintain his residence in the Chicago area.

"This was a very difficult decision, but an opportunity that I could not pass up," said Chabot. "The fact that I get to stay in Chicago and maintain my ties with Northwestern is a positive. I've had a tremendous experience here, both as a player and a staff member."

Chabot tallied 41 career starts on the line for the Wildcats, including the 1996 Rose Bowl and the 1997 Citrus Bowl. A four-year letterwinner and captain of the 1996 squad, he was named first-team All-Big Ten by the media and coaches his senior year. He also was named to the Academic All-Big Ten list in 1993 and received Northwestern's Marcel Price Award in 1996.

The 29-year-old native of Oxford, Ohio, played professionally during the 1997 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.

"There's no question that we will miss Justin," said Northwestern coach Randy Walker. "The 49ers are getting a very loyal and dedicated individual. Their gain is our loss."

During his tenure as a player and staff member, Chabot was a part of three Big Ten championship teams (1995, 1996 and 2000) and four bowl teams (1995, 1996, 2000 and 2003).

He graduated from Northwestern in 1996 with a degree in sociology.

Walker expects to name Chabot's successor in June.
