COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With the wind blowing out Sunday at Buckeye Field, Northwestern played tee ball with the Ohio State pitching, rapping out three extra-base hits including a pair of home runs to defeat OSU in the first contest of a doubleheader, 5-3.
Sophomore Kristen Amegin swatted a single, double and a home run while Erin Mobley added a round-tripper of her own for the 'Cats. Carri Leto collected a pair of singles for Northwestern, who had seven hits total in the game.
Northwestern (23-13, 6-5 Big Ten) opened the scoring with a run in the third inning when Mobley grounded out with the bases loaded to plate Katie Logan, who singled to lead off the frame.
The Wildcats' added another run in the fourth when Amegin led off the inning by launching an absolute moon-shot over the scoreboard in center field to push NU's lead to 2-0. The home run was Amegin's team leading seventh of the year, and also gave her 24 RBIs on the season, tying her with freshman Garland Cooper for tops on the team.
NU continued the scoring in the fifth when Mobley followed a lead-off Leto single with her second home run of the year to give the Wildcats the 4-0 advantage. Mobley drove in three runs in the contest.
Northwestern has now homered in its last five games -- all victories to match its longest winning streak of the year.
Freshman Eileen Canney started the game, earning the win and upping her record to 13-2 on the year. She cruised until the fifth inning, when Beth McAbier lined a single up the middle for Ohio State with runners on second and third to cut the Wildcat lead to 4-2.
Northwestern got one of the runs back in the sixth. Amegin led off with a double down the left-field line and was then replaced by pinch-runner Elizabeth Piatt, who scored one batter later on a Jamie Dotson groundout. Amegin finished the game 3-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored.
After surrendering another run in the bottom of the sixth, Canney gave way to Courtnay Foster, who pitched the final inning and a third with a pair of strikeouts for her third save of the year.
Kristi DeVries started and received the loss for Ohio State, dropping her record to 8-9 on the season. Ohio State falls to 26-16, 3-6 in the conference.
