EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman Eileen Canney earned her seventh shutout of the season in the second game of a doubleheader with Minnesota Sunday at Sharon J. Drysdale Field. Canney struck out ten batters for the second consecutive time and allowed only three hits while Kristen Amegin blasted her team-leading fifth home run of the season in the 4-0 Wildcat victory.

Canney has now won her last four decisions to run her record to 11-2 and has given up only one run in her last 21 innings pitched.

Amegin opened the scoring with a lead-off home run to left field in the second inning. The 'Cats (19-13, 3-5 Big Ten) put another run on the board in the frame when a Carri Leto grounder was misplayed by Minnesota pitcher Lyn Peyer allowed pinch-runner Elizabeth Piatt to score and give NU a 2-0 lead.

Peyer took the loss for the Golden Gophers (24-13, 5-3 Big Ten), dropping her record to 4-5.

Northwestern added another run in third when Eryn Manahan doubled in Lauren Olson, who was pinch-running following a Garland Cooper double. In the fifth inning Erin Mobley was able to trot home on a wild pitch after stealing third base to extend the NU lead to 4-0.

"We wanted to try some different things this game to get our offense going," Wildcat head coach Kate Drohan said. "I think we were able to do that well. We also got another great performance out of Eileen."

Unlike the previous game with Minnesota where NU pounded out eight hits and left 11 runners on base in a 2-1 loss, the Wildcats could only muster four hits in the second contest. This time Northwestern made the most of their opportunties, walking seven times and stealing three bases.

The Wildcats return to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday with a nonconference game against the Loyola Ramblers at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
