EVANSTON, Ill. -- Second-baseman Carri Leto (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) was the second-overall selection in the National Professional Fastpitch supplemental draft held Tuesday evening. The New York/New Jersey Juggernaut made the senior its first pick in the draft.
Leto was originally drafted 16th overall by the San Antonio Armadillos in December, but the team was dropped after the league decided to debut with six teams instead of eight.
"This has been kind of a roller coaster ride," Leto said. "I was not sure what was going to happen. I'm really excited, though, because this gives me a second chance."
Players originally selected by the Armadillos and the Colorado Altitude were eligible to be chosen in the supplemental draft. Seventeen total players were reassigned. The Juggernaut now hold Leto's rights until she completes her eligibility at the end of the season, at which point she will be permitted to sign with the team.
"I hope the opportunity will still be there this summer and that I'll be able to play in the league," Leto said.
One of the leading slugger's in NU history, Leto is currently batting .243 with a team-best 15 runs scored on the season after coming back from a torn ACL suffered during last year's Big Ten Tournament. She is the first female Northwestern athlete to be drafted by a professional franchise.
