
Northwestern In Ninth After Day One of NCAA Championships

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. -- After the first day of competition Thursday at the NCAA Championships in Long Island, N.Y., Northwestern sits in ninth place overall. The Wildcats posted five top-15 finishes during their first day events.
Highlighting the NU effort was the 400 medley relay, which placed sixth. Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), Mark Hamming (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) comprised the relay, finishing in 3:32.00.
Super-frosh Grevers captured a top-ten finish in his first Championships event, finishing ninth in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 22.01. Fellow freshman Alexandrov turned in an 11th-place showing in the 200-meter IM with a time of 1:59.00. Swanson finished the 200 IM in 1:59.73, good for 15th position.
Also placing in the top 15 for the Wildcats was the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Grevers, Swanson, Matt Wever (Boise, Idaho/Boise) and Ben Dexter (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli).
"We had a very strong first day," NU head coach Bob Groseth said. "If we continue to swim well, we can definitely finish in the top 10 in the country."
Brian Davis (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah) also participated in the first day of competition, swimming a 3:54.55 in the 400-meter freestyle, while Hamming turned in a 2:01.06 in the preliminary heats of the 200-meter IM.
