EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern's 33rd-ranked men's tennis team (10-4) will spend the end of its spring break in Conway, S.C., where it will meet Coastal Carolina (1-13) in dual action at 8 a.m. (CT) Saturday.
The Wildcats, who have not competed since edging Indiana 4-3 on March 5, look forward to resuming play, according to head coach Paul Torricelli.
"We are excited to have an opportunity to get outside and train a bit in order to get ready for conference play," said Torricelli.
Against the Hoosiers, Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice), Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbr?gge) each contributed to the come-from-behind victory en route to winning their second-straight in singles.
Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) also chipped in with a crucial triumph at No. 1, which improved his overall record to 13-10. The junior was successful in doubles as well, teaming with Tempke to prevent the sweep by Indiana.
The Chanticleers, a member of the Big South Conference, have a busy week, which began on Tuesday with a 7-0 loss to Ohio State. CC also plays host to Drake (March 24), Savannah State (March 26) and Birmingham-Southern (March 28).
Freshman Richard Redding, who owns a 5-9 dual record, has helmed the Chanticleers' lineup for part of the season. In the match against the No. 11 Buckeyes, he was defeated soundly in both singles and doubles.
"They are an unknown team to us," said Torricelli. "Despite their struggles, we will not overlook them."
Coastal Carolina will be NU's final nonconference opponent of the 2004 season. The 'Cats resume Big Ten action on April 3 against Purdue.
