WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sitting in third place, Northwestern looked to ensure a possible run for the top two spots in this morning's prelim session. With five swimmers advancing to tonight's final, the Wildcats have a good shot of at least maintaining their third-place position.

Freshman Matt Grevers continues to dominate the Big Ten Championship. He broke a new meet, pool, and Northwestern school record in the 100-yard freestyle this morning with a time of 42.72.

Senior Mark Hamming finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with an NCAA "B" standard time of 1:46.39 to advance to tonight's final session.

Tony Swanson, who has already made a huge splash in this year's Big Ten Championships, took fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:45.64.

Louis Torres placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:59.09 to move into the final session tonight. Northwestern's only other swimmer to advance to the finals is Ben Dexter, whose 44.92 finish in the 100 free was good enough for 12th place and a spot in tonight's finals. Diver Mike Oxman had a solid performance on the platform this morning and should place in the top five in tonight's final.
