EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern's 37th-ranked men's tennis team concluded its eight-match home stand today, falling to No. 50 Notre Dame 5-2 at Combe Tennis Center.
The 'Cats (8-4) came out strong against the Fighting Irish, winning two out of the three doubles matches to get the doubles point. However, the second half was a different story, as NU managed to win only one singles match.
"We came out and played doubles as well as we have all year," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "But Notre Dame stepped up and outplayed us (in singles) to win."
Northwestern's No. 2 doubles team of Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) beat Matthew Scott and Luis Haddock 8-6 to start. No. 3 Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) then added an 8-5 victory to put the 'Cats ahead early.
But then the momentum shifted toward the Fighting Irish, who proceeded to take five of the six singles match. Schaechterle, playing at No. 6, prevented the shutout by beating Eric Lagenkamp 6-3, 6-4.
Notre Dame (6-2) clinched its fourth win over a Big Ten opponent at No. 1 singles, where Luis Haddock nipped Tommy Hanus 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
"Notre Dame was the better team today," said Torricelli.
The Wildcats will face Wisconsin at noon on Feb. 28 in Madison, Wis.
