EVANSTON, Ill.--After a slow start in doubles, Northwestern's 37th-ranked men's tennis team cruised the rest of the way to blank DePaul 7-0 in a midweek match at Combe Tennis Center.

Down one match in doubles, the tandem of Matt "Zeus" Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) tied it up with an 8-5 win over Robert Kotroczo and Eric Huffman at No. 2. Then, with multiple lengthy deuces, Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) and Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) were able to outlast Sam Davidson and Mark Henderson 8-6 at No. 1 to get the doubles point for NU.

From there, the match was completely different, as the Wildcats (8-3) did not drop a set en route to storming through singles.

"I never compare doubles and singles, because they are always totally different," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "I just think the match-ups were in our favor tonight (especially in singles)."

First, Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) was unrelenting in his 6-0, 6-0 stomping of Radek Guzik at No. 6. Schaechterle and Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) followed with easy wins of their own at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) clinched the match by knocking out Henderson 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1. After Perrin won 6-2, 7-5 against Kotroczo at No. 2, Christian was able to pick up the sweep for Northwestern by topping Davidson 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 at No. 3.

"We did not capitalize on enough opportunities at No. 1 doubles," said DePaul head coach Luke Taylor. "Northwestern was fired up and wanted it more than us. We just could not hang on after their quick start in singles."

The 'Cats will play their final home match until April when they play host to No. 50 Notre Dame at 3 p.m. Saturday at Combe Tennis Center.
