EVANSTON, Ill.--A day after its first loss in five matches, Northwestern's 37th-ranked men's tennis team resurged to claim a 4-3 victory over No. 25 Arkansas at Combe Tennis Center.
"My biggest concern was that we would come out flat today," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "This was an important match for us, and I am proud how the guys came out energized."
Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) opened up with an 8-2 win over Imraan Ismail and Matt Roberts at No. 2. Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) picked up the doubles point for NU by outlasting Rohan Gajjar and Viktor Hebrand 9-8 (7-4) at No. 3.
The Wildcats (7-3) then reeled off three-straight wins in singles to clinch the match. First, Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) topped Matt Simpson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, then Christian pounded Roberts 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. Willy Lock earned the win for Northwestern by defeating Rohan Gajjar 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.
"Getting that doubles point turned out to be huge," said Torricelli. "To be up 4-0 on a team as good as Arkansas is really a great effort (by our team)."
The Wildcats will next try to tackle DePaul at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Combe Tennis Center.
