EVANSTON, Ill.--Northwestern's 37th-ranked men's tennis team was perfect at home--until today.
The Wildcats saw their four-match winning streak come to a close when they fell to No. 21 Harvard 7-0 at Combe Tennis Center. The loss dropped NU to 6-3 on the season, while the Crimson improved to 2-2.
"Harvard is a very good team," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "Their talent and experience really made the difference."
Harvard began the afternoon by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches for the point. Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) and Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) prevented the sweep by outlasting David Lingman and Jonathan Chu 9-8 (10-8).
"I thought we had a shot to win doubles," said Torricelli. "But again their experience showed, and they just pulled away from us."
The Crimson clinched the match at No. 5 singles, where Chris Chiou defeated Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) 6-3, 6-3. That put the score at 4-0, and Harvard went on to take the remaining matches for the shutout.
The Wildcats will remain at Combe Tennis Center for their next match, meeting No. 25 Arkansas at 1 p.m. Sunday.
