EVANSTON, Ill. -- Playing in a tournament that featured 10 of the nation's top 25 programs, Northwestern senior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) was named the Big Ten Conference Golfer of the Week after finishing fifth among a field of 90 golfers at the Mercedes-Benz Championships this past week in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
He shot an even-par 216, which included a three-under 69 on his final round. Johnson, a two-time honorable mention All-American, equaled the finishes of North Carolina's Dustin Bray and Florida's Camilo Villegas, two of the country's top-ranked golfers.
Johnson has finished in the top five of his last three tournaments. Northwestern, ranked 22nd nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin index, was the only northern school playing in the 18-team tournament. All 18 teams were ranked in the nation's top 70.
This is Johnson's second Big Ten player-of-the-week honor.
