EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after having a hand in shattering eight Norris Aquatics Center pool records and being named Co-Swimmer of the Meet to help Northwestern to a first-place finish in the TYR Invitational last weekend.
Grevers posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200-yard IM (1:45.84) while earning consideration times in the 50-yard freestyle (19.93) and 100-yard backstroke (47.45). He also swam on three record-breaking relays that finished with NCAA provisional times, 400-yard medley relay (3:15.16), 200-yard medley relay (1:28.82) and 400-yard freestyle relay (2:57.38). His leadoff legs in both the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays set new records.
This is Grevers' third career weekly honor and his first of the 2004-05 season. The Wildcats also earned last week's award when sophomore Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) was given the nod.
