EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshmen Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) and Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led Northwestern (8-19, 3-14 Big Ten) with double-digit kill totals of 11 and 10, respectively, Friday night against Michigan State (12-13, 7-10). But the Spartans prevailed on the strength of Kim Schram's 17 kills to sweep the Wildcats 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-28).
Junior co-captain Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend) was solid from her libero position, posting a team-high 13 digs. As a team though, NU struggled defending against Schram. She proved why she has the second-best kills per game average (5.17) in the Big Ten with her 17 on the night. She also added 11 digs for a double-double.
Senior co-captain Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) recorded 34 assists and now stands only 28 shy of cracking the 5,000 career-assists barrier. She continues to distance herself as NU's career-assists leader after breaking the record earlier this year when she passed Liz Renius' 4,743 mark.
Robertson fed fellow senior Leah Delcourt (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) for seven kills against the Spartans. Delcourt also added a solo block and a block assist from her middle-blocker position.
The duo will take the court at Welsh-Ryan Arena for the last time at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 20 against Michigan. They will be honored alongside their families in front of the Wildcat faithful before the match.
