EVANSTON, Ill. - For the fifth-straight match, freshman Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led the Wildcat offense in kills in Northwestern's Saturday night bout against No. 4 Penn State, but the `Cats fell in three games, 3-0 (17-30, 25-30, 8-30).
While the 'Cats hit a solid .216 in the opening game, the Nittany Lions hit an insurmountable .538, taking the frame 30-17.
But NU shook off the game-one loss and went stride for stride with the top-5 Lions in the second frame. The `Cats got out to a 4-2 lead before Penn State reclaimed the lead at 8-7. NU continually nipped at the Lions heels from that point though, never falling behind by more than two points.
Leah Delcourt (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) and freshman Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) combined for a block to pull NU within one, 22-23. Paulus immediately followed up her defensive effort with a kill to tie the game up. The freshman came through again for the `Cats with a kill to knot the teams at 24-24. Penn State finished the close game strongly however, going on a 4-0 run and eventually winning 30-25.
After the break, the Lions did not rest on their 2-0 lead and came out with a flurry of offense in game three. They got out to a 6-0 lead and NU never really threatened, losing 30-8.
The `Cats return to Welsh-Ryan Arena next weekend to face Michigan and Michigan State. The trip back to Evanston, Ill. will mark the final home games for seniors Robertson and Delcourt.
