EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern defeated DePauw University, 59-48, in a men's basketball exhibition Thursday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats were given a good battle by the Tigers through much of the first half, but assumed control with a 12-2 run at the end of the first half and another 12-4 run to start the second stanza.
Vedran Vukusic recorded a double-double for NU, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He was the only Wildcat player to score in double figures. Three teammates -- senior Davor Duvancic, junior T.J. Parker, and freshman Brandon Lee -- scored nine points apiece, while Mohamed Hachad had eight points.
In his first action in a Northwestern uniform, St. John's transfer Tim Doyle had an assist on the Wildcats' first basket of the night and ended the game with four points, four assists and six rebounds in 31 minutes.
DePauw was led in scoring by Alex Stewart, who hit his first four three-point attempts en route to 16 points. Joey Hanger had eight points and nine rebounds.
Thursday's game was hotly contested early on. Three-pointers by Stewart and Brian Oilar gave DePauw a 12-8 lead with 11 minutes left in the half, before NU went on a 7-0 run thanks to Hachad and Duvancic.
DePauw again turned the tables, taking a 20-16 lead on consecutive treys by Stewart, and then his fourth trey of the night stopped a 6-0 NU run and put the Tigers up 23-22.
Vince Scott hit a layup immediately down the floor, though, and that triggered a 12-2 run that gave the Wildcats a 34-25 halftime advantage. Vukusic punctuated the run by taking a Duvancic pass and knocking down a three.
After the teams traded baskets to start the second half, NU went on a 10-2 binge to open up a 17-point lead at 46-29. The lead would hover at that level until the final few minutes, when DePauw got as close as 10 just before a Parker free throw in the final seconds set the score.
Northwestern will begin the 2004-05 regular season a week from Friday, when the Wildcats travel to the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. The 'Cats will open that tournament with the University of Portland; tipoff Friday is slated for 9 p.m. Central.
