EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern volleyball Head Coach Keylor Chan announced the signing of Chelsy Hyser to a National Letter of Intent Wednesday, Nov 10. Hyser will don the purple and white for the Wildcats starting next season as a member of the class set to graduate from NU in 2009.

Hyser is a 6-1 middle blocker from Belvidere, Ill. where she attends Belvidere High School. She comes highly-touted to NU as the 54th ranked recruit in the nation according to PrepVolleyball.com. Hyser earned numerous all-tournament nods during her career as a four-year starter for Belvidere. She was named to the Morton Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team two years in a row. Hyser also played her way onto the United Township Invitational and Jacob's Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Teams. As a senior, she was named the MVP of her high school team and also received the honor of being named Boone County Sports Athlete of the Week. Her career at Belvidere yielded two NIC-9 Regional Championships for the Bucs, while she was named to the NIC-9 All-Conference Team three times.

Hyser also earned top-flight experience playing for Club Fusion, which ranked first in the Great Lakes Region and finished first at the Pre-National Invitational during her career. Club Fusion -- which freshman Brittney Aldridge also played for -- finished second at the Northern Lights National Qualifier with Hyser anchoring the middle. Hyser is a National Honors Society and Spanish Honors Society member. She was also selected as a Northern Illinois Conference Scholar Athlete.

Hyser's addition to the Wildcat roster has Chan and the NU staff thrilled...

"Chelsy is a prototype of what you recruit in the Big Ten. She's one of the best middle blockers in the country because she's extremely athletic, moves very well and is just a natural at her position. Being an Illinois native, she'll fit in perfectly here and we're just thrilled to have her. She played on the same club team as Brittney, so we're excited to see what happens when we reunite these two. One of the best things about Chelsy is that she's a tremendously intelligent athlete, who catches on quickly, so she'll be able to step right in."
