NORMAL, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer team's NCAA Tournament hopes took a hit Sunday afternoon, as the Wildcats were not able to overcome a two-goal deficit and fell on the road to Illinois State, 2-1.
The Wildcats (9-7-2) got a goal in the 71st minute from freshman Kelsey Hans, her team-leading 13th of the season that left her one shy of the school record held by current assistant Stephanie Erickson. However, it was not enough as NU fell to 1-6 on the road this season.
"This is a disappointing loss," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. "We have started slowly on the road all year, and today was not much different. In order to have success and earn postseason bids, we need to win matches like this."
After a scoreless first half, ISU (8-5-3) took the lead six minutes into the second stanza when Lauren Kahlenbeck picked off a Redbird shot that hit the crossbar and put it in the goal. Just 12 minutes later, Meghan Boler was able to knock home an unassisted goal to make the score 2-0.
Hans' unassisted effort came eight minutes after Boler's marker, but NU -- which outshot ISU 8-7 on the day -- could not find the equalizer.
The Wildcats will finish the regular season next Saturday at Oakland (Mich.). Kickoff for that match is slated for noon. The following Thursday, the 'Cats will play Illinois in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at Columbus, Ohio.
