Wildcats Compete in Prequalifying Rounds of ITA All-American Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - Four Northwestern tennis players competed in both singles and doubles action in the prequalifying portion of the ITA All-American Championships Friday, Oct. 1 and Saturday, Oct. 2.
In the opening round of 256 players for singles, Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) began his day by defeating Niels Boksik, 6-3; 7-6. Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) won in straight sets as well, beating Sergi Vila, 7-5; 6-3. And Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) won a tight opening match against Greg Maarchalk, 6-2; 4-6; 7-5.
The group moved into the round of 128 players, where Lock looked strong in the first game of his match against Alex Hume, winning 7-5. But he dropped the next two games 3-6; 0-6, falling out of the tournament. Friedland fell to Matt Simpson, 6-1; 6-2. Christian gutted through a sprained ankle he suffered early in his second match, but fell to Kiril Tcherveniachki, 6-2; 6-3. Senior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) had a bye into the round of 128, where he defeated Jordan Magarik 6-4; 6-3. Schaechterle fell in the round of 64 to Matt Berry though, 6-2; 6-1.
In doubles action, Friedland and Lock defeated Dessauer and White, 8-6, in the round of 128. The duo lost their second match though, 8-2. Christian and Schaechterle received a bye into the round of 64 and beat Aarum and Ayali, 8-2. In the round of 32 though, Christian and Schaechterle fell, 8-2.
The `Cats still have Senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) in the tournament, who was given a virtual bye into the qualifier portion of the championships, which run from Monday, Oct. 4 to Wednesday, Oct. 6.
