EVANSTON, Ill. -- After earning its first Big Ten win against Iowa -- a 3-2 victory (30-22, 21-30, 28-30, 30-18, 15-10) on Oct. 8 -- Northwestern (6-10, 1-5 Big Ten) will take on Purdue and Indiana in Welsh-Ryan Arena at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 15 and Saturday, Oct. 16.
"Getting that win against Iowa was a building block that we need to learn from and continue to improve upon," Head Coach Keylor Chan said. "We've been getting better each week, and I look for us to improve even more in these upcoming matches."
Purdue (10-6, 3-3 Big Ten) is coming off a weekend in which they suffered two losses against a pair of top-10 teams -- No. 5 Penn State and No. 8 Ohio State. The Boilermakers fell in both matches by a score of 3-0.
Purdue's offense is led by Kim McConaha and Leah Wischmeier, who have 249 and 265 kills, respectively. The Boilermakers have a strong defense as well with four players over 100 digs on the year -- Daren Poe leads the team with 212.
Indiana comes to Evanston after dropping two home matches to No. 5 Penn State and No. 8 Ohio State. Northwestern's match against Indiana will mark the first televised match of the year for the 'Cats. The contest will air the following day (Sunday, Oct. 17) at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Chicago.
The Hoosiers' Katie Pollom paced IU last week with 22 kills with a 3.14 kills per game average, while Tasha Arsenych set up most of Pollom's kills with 63 assists. Pollom also came up big at the net for eight blocks, while Lindsay Cochrane swept the floor with 20 digs.
On the year, Christina Archibald and Pollom lead IU's offense with 240 and 256 kills, respectively. Mandy Eberle is a force in the middle for the Hoosiers with 46.5 blocks, averaging 1.31 per game.
The 'Cats split their matches against Purdue and Indiana in 2003, winning at home, while dropping both road matches.
For NU, sophomore Julie Purcell (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) boasts a team-leading 151 kills, while freshman Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) has a 3.52 kills per game average. Paulus has come on strong as of late, posting a career-high 28 kills against Iowa.
Junior co-captain Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend) anchors the back row for the 'Cats with 231 digs, while freshman Brittney Aldridge (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) boasts 26.5 total blocks on the, with five solos.
Senior co-captain Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) now stands at second place all-time with 4,511 assists and is just 232 shy of overtaking Liz Renius' school record of 4,743. Robertson needs to average about 16 assists in each of the 'Cats remaining 14 regular season matches. She has averaged 36 assists over NU's first 16 matches.
Friday's match against Purdue is Take a Kid to a Game Night, where all kids 18 & under receive free admission with a paid adult.
Saturday's match is Scout Night, when all scouts, leaders and their family receive admission for only $1. All scouts attending the game will receive a Wildcat Scout patch.
