EVANSTON, Ill. - Three different Wildcats scored second-half goals Sunday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex to propel Northwestern to a 3-0 victory over Western Illinois.

With its seventh win of the season, NU matched its win total from all of last year with six games still remaining.

Sophomore John Carlstedt (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) netted his first career goal in the 64th minute to open the scoring. Sophomore Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) sent a ball wide to freshman David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) who crossed to Carlstedt at the far post.

NU continued to press the Leathernecks, breaking through again in the 84th minute when Alvarez curled a free kick around the wall to the near post. The goal was the 10th of the season for the Big Ten's leading scorer.

Junior Brad Napper (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) added the third score three minutes later on a corner kick from Eric Brin (Westlake, Calif./Westlake) and Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands).

"Western Illinois is a tough opponent," NU head coach Tim Lenahan said. "We needed a goal to be able to open things up on them and that is what we were able to do in the second half."

Justin Pines (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) started the match in goal for the Wildcats, making one save in one half of work. Brian Heckenbach (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) came in to play the second half, also making one save to preserve the combined shutout.

Both teams started out sluggishly, combining for only six shots in the first half. NU was flagged five times for being offsides in the first stanza, but finished the match with a 13-7 lead in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corners.

Roth's assist puts him just one shy of breaking NU's single-season record.

Northwestern returns to action Sunday, Oct. 17, at No. 3 Indiana.
