BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Has Northwestern arrived this season as a soccer power? Certainly the evidence is there: a 7-3-2 record entering the weekend -- including a 2-2 draw with the then-No. 9 team in the country, Penn State -- and several weeks with a regional ranking, a first in the program's history.
On Sunday, however, the announcement became official: Northwestern may not yet be a soccer power, but the 'Cats have arrived. And Sunday may stand as the day that changed everything for this program.
In a result that is sure to send shockwaves throughout the college soccer world, a goal in the 39th minute by Brad North stood up, as the Wildcats defeated the program that stands as the one by which all others are measured -- Indiana. On the road, no less.
The Hoosiers entered Sunday's contest as the defending national champions -- they have six to their name -- and are ranked third in the latest national coaches poll.
The win was not only NU's first ever against the Hoosiers, it was the Wildcats' first in a Big Ten regular-season match since 1999. It was also Tim Lenahan's 150th as a college coach.
