EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern held a 3-1 advantage over New Hampshire entering the second half Sunday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex, but UNH tallied three unanswered goals to defeat NU, 4-3.
Senior Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) got the high-scoring match started in the 22nd minute. Sophomore Meghan Small (Macungie, Pa./Moravian Academy) sent a great pass into space for freshman Cassie Miller (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), who found Cooper wide open in front of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
Cooper would make the score 2-0 a minute later on a penalty stroke.
After UNH scored on a bizarre rebound off the official, Miller found the net herself on a breakaway to give Northwestern a 3-1 lead at the break.
Despite NU (7-7) controlling most of the scoring opportunities in the second half, it was New Hampshire which did all of the scoring.
UNH (2-11) took three shots in the second period of play, all within a four minute span and all of them found the back of cage to give New Hampshire a 4-3 lead in the 46th minute.
NU earned a pair of late corners in the match, but could not convert.
Northwestern outshot (20-10) and outcornered (11-8) UNH, but could not finish its opportunities. Goalkeeper Christine Buckley made 13 saves for New Hampshire.
NU returns to action at noon CDT Saturday, Oct. 16, at Ohio State.
