COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern created its share of scoring opportunities Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, but it was Ohio State which jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 4-2 win over the Wildcats.

NU took the ball from the opening whistle straight into the OSU circle, earning a pair of early corners, but point blank shots from sophomore Meghan Small (Macungie, Pa./Moravian Academy) and senior Morgan Kuhn (Chesterfield, Mo./Lafayette) were turned away by Buckeye goalkeeper Lindsay Williams.

Ohio State (8-6, 1-3 Big Ten) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 26th and 29th minutes.

The Wildcats (7-8, 1-3 Big Ten) cut the lead in half, earning a penalty corner as time expired in the first half. Junior Ellen Schlafly (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) tipped in a Cassie Miller (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) pass to make the score 2-1 at the break.

Schlafly's goal was her first of the season. She leads NU with five assists this year.

The Buckeyes came out strong in the second half, keeping much of the play in NU's end. OSU broke through with another pair of goals in the 46th and 59th minutes to extend its lead to 4-1.

Northwestern did not quit fighting, finding the back of the cage in the 60th minute when senior Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) one-timed a shot past Williams on Miller's second assist of the match.

Cooper has now scored a goal in the Wildcats' last five matches.

NU got several other chances late in the match, but was unable to convert.

Northwestern returns to action next weekend in its final regular season home matches of the year against Penn State and Duke.
