EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern (5-9, Big Ten 0-4) lost to No. 19 Illinois Friday evening in Welsh-Ryan Arena in three games (21-30, 17-30, 27-30). It was the second conference win for the Fighting Illini, who improve to 10-2 overall on the year.
"We're taking steps forward as a team as far as building team chemistry and finding out who plays well together," Head Coach Keylor Chan said. "Being so young, we have to stay patient and realize that it's a process and getting to where we need to be doesn't happen over night."
Freshman Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) recorded a team-high nine kills, while junior co-captain Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) had 17 digs - including three spectacular saves on one point.
Senior Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) recorded 34 assists, while freshman middle blocker Brittney Aldridge (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) led the defense with 2.5 total blocks.
