EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern running back Jason Wright has been awarded the inaugural Bobby Bowden Athlete of the Year Award from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
Established as a way to honor all-around excellence in a student-athlete, the Bobby Bowden Athlete of the Year Award is a national award recognizing five specific student-athlete criteria: on- and off-the-field character, inspiring on-field ability, classroom attendance and performance, community participation and respect for the campus student body.
Wright, Northwestern's two-time, first-team Academic All-American who recently accepted an invitation to this year's Hula Bowl All-Star game, was selected to receive the award by members of the AFCA and FCA staff. Along with his achievements on the field, Wright also is the leader of Northwestern's FCA "Huddle."
He became just the third player in NU history to rush for a pair of 1,000-yard seasons. Wright closed his career with back-to-back 200-yard performances -- a career-best 251 yards versus Illinois and 237 vs. Bowling Green in the Motor City Bowl.
"As great a player as Jason is, he is a far greater person," says FCA Representative Jere Johnson, who works with Wright through the FCA Huddle at NU. "He is giving, caring, sharing and loving to his Huddle and teammates. He is a great example for every athlete-one of the true good guys in college football today."
