EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University football coach Randy Walker has announced that Eric Washington, an assistant coach at Ohio University the past three years, will replace Jay Peterson as the Wildcats' defensive line coach.
With the addition of Washington, the Wildcats' coaching staff is now set for the 2004 season. Last month, Walker hired Kevin Johns and Garrick McGee as Northwestern's respective running backs and wide receivers coaches.
While at Ohio University, Washington served as the Bobcats' defensive line coach. He joined the Bobcats on Jan. 10, 2001, after spending three years as defensive coordinator at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, R.I.
Washington began his college coaching career at Texas A&M University as a graduate assistant in 1997. That team went on to capture the Big XII South Division title and accept an invitation to the 1998 Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. He prepared opponent offensive scouting reports for the Aggie defense and assisted with monitoring the academic progress of the football student-athletes.
Washington has worked at four different high schools during his career: at Amon Carter-Riverside High School in Fort Worth, Texas, Westmont (Ill.) High School, Captain Shreve High School (Shreveport, La.) and Ruston (La.) High School.
A native of Shreveport, La., Washington earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Grambling State University in 1993. He was commissioned as a Naval Reserve Officer in April 1998 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Before separating from active duty naval service in March 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade on April 7, 2000.
Washington, 33, married the former Amy Wolfe in December 2002.
