MINNEAPOLIS--Northwestern's 58th-ranked men's tennis team started the afternoon well against No. 43 Virginia but cooled down in losing 5-2. The defeat moves NU's record to 2-1 overall, 0-0 Big Ten.
The doubles squads for the Wildcats did not disappoint. Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) won 8-6 at No. 1 against the Cavaliers' (2-0) duo of Rylan Rizza and Doug Stewart.
"We really hung in there in doubles," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "We knew how tough (Virginia) was, they beat a preseason top-20 team in Minnesota the night before. We knew it would be a tough match."
Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbr?gge) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) also contributed to the doubles point in a nail-biter over Darrin Cohen and Nick Meythaler, winning 9-8 in a tiebreaker at No. 3.
Tempke prevented the shutout in singles, defeating Rizza convincingly, 6-3, 6-1.
"I have a lot of confidence in Christian," said Torricelli, who was pleased with the freshman's performance in his two matches.
The Wildcats will stay in Minneapolis to take on No. 15 Minnesota (0-1, 0-0) at noon Sunday.
