MINNEAPOLIS--Freshman Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) earned the only singles point for Northwestern's men's tennis team as it was defeated by No. 15 Minnesota 5-2 in both teams' Big Ten opener.

"Willy really did a good job," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "He had that kind of performance today that I know he is capable of."

Lock picked off Brian Lipinski 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 to improve to 9-3 this season, including 2-2 in dual matches. His teammates, however, were not as fortunate.

Classmate Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbr?gge), who was NU's lone singles winner Saturday against Virginia, today lost to Avery Ticer 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was beaten 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 to 85th-ranked Christ Wettengel.

In doubles, the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) found some success, picking up the point after Hanus and Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School), as well as Tempke and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine), won at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.

But the rest of the match was dominated by the Gophers (1-1, 1-0).

"We were outplayed," said Torricelli. "Our team just could not break through (after doubles). Minnesota played well after its upset by Virginia on Friday."

The Wildcats open their home schedule this weekend at Combe Tennis Center, taking on Pepperdine at 6 p.m. Friday and Northern Illinois at 4 p.m. Saturday.
