EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University senior women's soccer players Molly Greene (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North) were named to the Great Lakes All-Region Second Team for 2003. The honors were announced recently by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
It is the first time either player has been honored regionally, and marks the first time since 1998 a Northwestern player has been named to the all-region squads by the NSCAA.
"I am really happy to see Aileen and Molly get honored by the NSCAA," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh, whose team completed its season at 7-10-1 (3-6-1 Big Ten). "They really deserve it-they were steady for us all year, and it is great to see their efforts and our program recognized by the coaches involved in the regional awards. Those are two great women being honored for us, and we are going to miss them tremendously next year."
Molly Greene, a four-year starter at sweeper, anchored a defense that allowed 1.68 goals per game with a freshman goalkeeper. In addition, she scored the match-winning goal in a 1-0 victory against Michigan (Sept. 21) and added an assist. Greene started every match Northwestern played during her tenure; like Guiney, she was a three-time captain. Greene was a first-team All-Big Ten pick in 2001 and 2003, and earned second-team honors in 2002.
Aileen Guiney, a midfielder, finished the 2003 season as the Wildcats' leading scorer, notching four goals and four assists for 12 points. She ended her career with eight goals and 20 assists for 36 points; her 20 assists is second all-time at NU and the 36 points are ninth. After missing the 1999 season to a knee injury, Guiney started all but one of the matches she played during the last four years and was one of the NU captains each of her last three years. Guiney was a first-team All-Big Ten selection each of the last two seasons.
