EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University head softball coach Kate Drohan has announced the addition of Lauren Schwendimann as an assistant coach. Schwendimann will work primarily with the pitching staff and will spend time working with hitters as well.
Schwendimann played an integral role in the Wildcats' run to the 2003 NCAA Tournament as a player and Drohan is confident that her experience and success will prove invaluable as a coach.
"We are thrilled for Lauren to join the staff," Drohan said. "Her fantastic career on the mound is one of the major reasons we were able to enjoy so much success on a national stage."
Schwendimann graduated from Northwestern in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies and a major in Psychology. In addition to her tremendous playing career, Schwendimann was also active in the Northwestern community. She served as the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
The Tustin, Ca. native's name litters the NU record books. With 53 career wins, she ranks third in school history. Her 59 complete games is also good enough for third-most all-time. She ranks third all-time in strikeouts with 555.
On March 23, 2000 Schwendimann threw a perfect game against nationally-ranked Michigan, marking only the third perfect game in NU history and the first since 1984.
Schwendimann garnered a host of accolades for her performance on the diamond. In 2003, she was the Northwestern nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year following the Wildcats' 36-19 season which landed them 14th nationally in the final Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). Schwendimann served as the captain last year as well. She was twice named to the all Mideast Region second team and earned second team all-Big Tenn honors once. She was the recipient of the prestigious Vandy Christie Memorial Scholarship in 2002.
