Northwestern University women's soccer player Molly Greene (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week Monday. The announcement was made by the conference office.
Greene shared the honor this week with Michigan goalkeeper Megan Tuura.
Greene -- a senior sweeper who has earned All-Big Ten honors each of the last two years -- has anchored a defense that has grown extremely stingy in recent weeks. Last week was another example, as the Wildcats shut out Loyola-Chicago Thursday (1-0) and then knocked off Iowa in a Big Ten match Sunday (3-1). In the match before those two, Greene scored the lone goal when Northwestern earned a 1-0 win over Michigan on Sept. 21; it was NU's first victory against the Wolverines since 1998.
Since starting the season 0-2 -- and being outscored 6-1 in those matches -- the Wildcats are 6-1-0 (2-1-0 Big Ten) and have outscored their opponents 12-5 with four shutouts. Of the five goals scored by the opposition during this stretch, three came in NU's lone loss (3-0 to Michigan State on Sept. 19).
This is the first time Greene has won the Big Ten's weekly honor; she is the first NU player to earn weekly honors in women's soccer since Susie McCreery took co-defensive honors on Nov. 5, 2001.
Northwestern is in action two more times this weekend, traveling to Minnesota for a Friday night game (7 p.m.) and then taking on Wisconsin Sunday (1 p.m.). The Wildcats will play Big Ten opponents in each of their next seven matches, and five of those will be on the road.
