EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has hired Arvid Swan as its new assistant men's tennis coach. The announcement was made recently by Wildcats head coach Paul Torricelli.
"I am thrilled to have Arvid join our program," said Torricelli. "He was one of the most respected players in the conference and heavily recruited by everyone. He was an intense competitor during his playing career and always a team leader. Arvid's commitment and work ethic will be a real asset to NU tennis, just as they were during his playing days with the Wolverines."
Swan replaces Jay Udwadia, who left the program in the summer to become head coach at Drake University. Udwadia is the fifth straight Wildcat assistant to move onto a head coaching job under Torricelli.
"Jay made a terrific contribution to our program over four years and will be missed," said Torricelli. "There was a real bond between he and our players during his time with us. He really established himself in the coaching ranks, and it was only a matter of time before his opportunity came along. He will have Drake tennis on the rise very soon.
Swan was a four-year letterman at Michigan (1995-98) and was a team captain two times. He earned All-Big Ten honors in 1996 and was a three-time member of the Academic All-Big Ten Team. In addition, Swan helped the 1996 Michigan team win the conference title.
Swan most recently attended law school at Indiana and received his degree in 2002. He and his wife Bridgett -- who ran cross country and track at Michigan -- live in Chicago.
